Ankle Pain
Ankle pain can stem from a range of injuries and conditions affecting the bones, ligaments, tendons, or surrounding tissues. Some of the most common reasons for ankle discomfort include:
- Sprains and Strains: Sprains involve damage to the ligaments that support the ankle, while strains affect the surrounding muscles or tendons. These injuries may occur suddenly or develop over time.
- Bone Issues: Problems such as stress fractures or extra (accessory) bones can sometimes affect ankle stability and movement.
- Arthritis: Both osteoarthritis (typically caused by wear and tear) and rheumatoid arthritis (an autoimmune condition) can lead to pain, stiffness, and swelling in the ankle joint.
- Bursitis: Inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs that cushion the ankle can result in pain and swelling.
- Tendonitis: Tendons around the ankle—including the Achilles, peroneal, and both tibial tendons—may become inflamed due to overuse or injury, causing localised pain and stiffness.

Any persistent or severe ankle pain warrants professional attention. Initial management at home can include RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation) and over-the-counter pain relief. If symptoms do not improve after a few days or remain significant, it’s important to seek expert assessment.
At Market Street Clinic, we perform comprehensive evaluations to diagnose the cause of your ankle pain. Based on your needs, treatment may involve therapies such as Low Level Laser Therapy, tailored exercise regimens, bespoke insoles or orthoses, and footwear advice.
